INTERPOL will likely extend its ‘Silver Notice’ alert scheme for at least another year after the initiative delivered ‘astounding’ results, according to a senior official.
Mark McDaid, Criminal Intelligence Officer at INTERPOL, told ‘European Anti-Financial Crime Summit 2025’ that the measure has been a major success.
‘It involves 50 countries, and we’re expecting about nine notes to be issued per country,’ he told a panel at the event in Dublin.
‘I believe we have just over 50 have been issued, and the results we’re seeing are astounding. We’re finding property all over the world.’
He added: ‘And at the end of the year, I expect that they may continue with perhaps another year’s pilot.
‘It is expected to build on its current success.’
INTEROL issued its first-ever ‘Silver Notice’ in January, aimed at tracing assets laundered across international borders.
Silver Notices are the newest addition to INTERPOL’s colour-coded alert system, which enables countries to share information and requests globally. This pilot initiative, involving 52 countries, will run until at least November 2025.
Silver Notices and Diffusions allow member countries to publicly request information on assets tied to criminal activity. These notices can help locate and identify laundered assets—such as properties, vehicles, financial accounts, and businesses. The information gathered can be used for asset seizure or recovery under national laws.
INTERPOL Secretary General Valdecy Urquiza said the sripping criminals of their illegal profits “is one of the most powerful ways to fight organized crime”, adding that the Silver Notice could help with asset recovery.
“By targeting their financial gains, we disrupt networks and reduce their harm to communities.”
Participating countries can collectively request up to 500 Silver Notices during the pilot phase.
