By PAUL O’DONOGHUE, Senior Correspondent

THE Black Axe gang is one of the world’s most notorious criminal groups, stealing billions of euros annually from victims through cyber-enabled fraud.

Episode 7 of ‘Collared’, AML Intelligence’s financial crime podcast, features an in-depth interview with Pat Lordan revealing how law enforcement fights the group.

As former head of both the Garda National Economic Crime Bureau and the Irish Financial Intelligence Unit, Pat was responsible for numerous high-profile national and international operations – including the one which broke the Black Axe gang.

The episode also features a new jobs posting – does this sound like it could be for you?

“Wanted: Money Spark is seeking a Financial Transaction Control Analyst to join their exciting technology start-up company.

“Key roles and responsibilities will include receiving and processing of incoming cash funds and transferring of funds to accounts indicated by our managers.”

If this sounds like a job you might be interested in, watch out – it’s for a role as a money mule.

These people move stolen money on behalf of criminals. They have emerged as key players in modern money laundering networks.

We examine how these mules help criminals move massive amounts of money, why they are recruited into it, and how officials are clamping down.

Episode 7 comes after last week’s ‘Collared’ looked at how scam centres work. It also probed the $250 billion in profits generated by modern slavery practises.
