LATEST: Europol launches ‘EU Anti-Scam Platform’ for law enforcement

Jean-Philippe Lecouffe, Deputy Executive Director of Operations at Europol

By PAUL O’DONOGHUE, Senior Correspondent

EUROPOL has just established a new ‘EU Anti-Scam Platform’ to assist law enforcement in fighting online fraud.

Speaking at the European Anti-Financial Crime Summit (EAFCS) 2026 in Dublin, Jean-Philippe Lecouffe, Deputy Executive Director of Operations at the agency, said the initiative will focus on information-sharing.

The platform will have five core pillars. These are:

  • Maximising intelligence sharing
  • ‘Swift reactions’ to intercept and recover stolen funds
  • Operational coordination
  • Threat monitoring
  • Public-private partnerships and prevention

“[Due to] the massive scale of online fraud schemes, we decided to step up our effort. Therefore, Europol has recently established the EU Anti-Scam Platform,” Mr Lecouffe said.

“An operational hub to confront and address the industrialisation of online fraud.

“This platform will draw on expertise from the European Cybercrime Centre and the European Financial and Economic Crime Centre of Europol.

Mr Lecouffe said that Europol will use the initiative to give law enforcement agencies specialised briefings on scams.

“With Europol being the criminal information hub in the EU, we have a wealth of information. Based on this information we will, every week, publish for law enforcement only an operational report related to online scams.

“This report will include the most prevalent types and online phenomena of online fraud schemes.

He said it will also include:

  • Reported financial losses
  • The types of victims
  • The ‘techniques and tools’ used by scammers
  • Transaction patterns

“This is to help the law enforcement agencies in the EU to react swiftly to these threats,” he said.

“This initiative marks the strategic shift to more proactive disruption and prevention of online fraud and scams.”
