ANALYSIS: Why the US is finally cracking down on money laundering in the art market

IN February 2022, the US Department of the Treasury published a landmark study on money laundering in the art market. Its conclusion was deliberately cautious: while vulnerabilities clearly existed, subjecting the sector to a full AML regime was not considered a regulatory priority at that time.

The underlying logic was one of sequencing — other risks appeared more urgent, more measurable, and more systemically destabilising.
