EU to sanction former gymnast reportedly close to Putin

European Union officials have proposed sanctions against former gymnast Alina Kabaeva, who chairs the Russian National Media Group and who is reportedly close to Russian President Vladimir Putin.

Although the list is yet to be approved by European governments, EU ambassadors are expected to meet later this week to discuss the bloc’s proposed sixth package of sanctions, which aims to phase out all Russian oil imports by the end of the year.
