LAURA Kövesi, the EU chief prosecutor, said a senior European Commission official asked her to “tone down” public messaging on corruption uncovered by her office.

The head of the European Public Prosecutor’s Office (EPPO) said she rejected the request. “I said: How dare you tell me this? We are independent. And if there is a case, it is our mandate to investigate it,” she said.
