ANALYSIS: The Cayman Islands promised more transparency around shell companies – it hasn’t delivered

THE British Crown Dependency of the Cayman Islands recently launched a new “legitimate interest” beneficial ownership information scheme, following years of pressure from campaigners and UK politicians pushing for transparency.

In a news release published jointly with the UK government, the Cayman Islands was praised for taking “important steps … to promote greater corporate transparency”. The categories of professionals who may make requests for information on the register include, among others, journalists, academic researchers, and members of specialist NGOs.
