JUAN-Manuel Vega Serrano has been appointed Vice-Chair of Europe’s new Anti-Money Laundering Authority (AMLA).

Mr Vega Serrano is one of the four AMLA Executive Board members. He will serve alongside the organization’s Chair, Bruna Szego.

In a statement, AMLA said: “Juan-Manuel Vega Serrano brings over three decades of experience in public service”.

The watchdog highlighted his career “dedicated to AML and counter-terrorist financing (CFT)”.

“A senior member of Spain’s higher civil service since 1992, Mr. Vega Serrano has held several prominent roles in shaping AML/CFT policy both nationally and internationally,” it said.

Mr Vega has held a variety of prominent roles in the sector, including serving as AML/CFT regulator at the Spanish Treasury.

He was also Head of Spain’s AML/CFT Supervisory Authority and Financial Intelligence Unit (FIU), and President of the Financial Action Task Force (FATF).

“As Vice-Chair, Mr. Vega Serrano will support AMLA’s mission to strengthen the EU’s AML/CFT framework,” AMLA said.

Earlier this week, the watchdog kicked off its search for its fifth and final Executive Board member. Germany’s Dr Marcus Pleyer held the final seat, but resigned after taking up a State Secretary role in the new German government.

AML Intelligence previously looked at who could be in the running for the final Executive Board seat.
