MEXICAN financial technology firm Kapital has reached coveted “unicorn” status after its valuation topped $1 billion with a fresh funding round.

The measure follows several high-profile purchases of more traditional banking operations. These include the company buying assets from Intercam earlier this month. Intercam is one of the Mexican lenders sanctioned by the U.S. over alleged links to fentanyl trafficking.
